Three ways in. Complete visibility.
S7 PLC Buddy bridges your running PLC and your TIA Portal project in a single interface — pick the PLC connection method that fits your network, and add TIA Portal if you want it.
S7 WebServer API
Connect over your plant network via the Siemens S7 WebServer API. Real-time diagnostic buffer, live tag values, alarm management — all without TIA Portal open or installed.
Requires: S7 PLC with WebServer enabledOPC UA
Connect over OPC UA when your plant disables the WebServer for IEC 62443 hardening. Live tag values, CPU status, and full AI Agent support — the interface Siemens designed for locked-down networks.
Requires: S7-1500 with OPC UA server enabledTIA Portal V21 Integration
Connect to an open TIA Portal V21 project on the same machine. Browse block source code, inspect hardware configuration, and migrate Ladder networks to SCL with AI assistance.

Built for networks that can't reach the internet
Combine OPC UA with a local AI provider and S7 PLC Buddy never has to leave your plant network — not for the PLC connection, not for the AI Agent.
PLC connection stays on-network
Connect over OPC UA instead of the WebServer API — the interface Siemens designed for IEC 62443-hardened plants. No internet access required for diagnostics, tags, or the dashboard.
AI Agent stays on-network too
Point the AI Agent at a local Ollama instance instead of a cloud API. Your conversations, tag values, and diagnostic data never leave your machine or network.
Features
Everything you need on site
Built for the plant floor. No bloat, no unnecessary steps.
Health Dashboard
CPU operating status and the full diagnostic buffer with human-readable event text, auto-refreshed every 5 seconds. Export to CSV for reporting or incident records.
Data Browser & Watchlist
Navigate your PLC's full tag tree. Add any variable to a persistent watchlist for live value monitoring — survives app restarts, picks up where you left off.
AI Agent
Ask about your PLC in plain language. The agent reads live data, browses diagnostic events, and returns answers — not raw numbers. Bring your own provider: Claude, OpenAI, OpenRouter, or a fully local Ollama model.
Alarm Management
Browse active and historical alarms with timestamps and descriptions. Acknowledge individual alarms or all at once — directly from the app, no TIA Portal needed.
AI Agent
Ask your PLC in plain language
The AI Agent reads live diagnostic data, browses tag values, and explains what it finds — no custom queries, no scripting. Just ask.
- ✓ Diagnose faults from natural language descriptions
- ✓ Read and explain TIA Portal block source code
- ✓ Migrate Ladder networks to SCL with explanations
- ✓ Export full chat history for documentation
Getting started
Up and running in minutes
Connect
Choose WebServer or OPC UA, enter your PLC's address and credentials in Settings. S7 PLC Buddy handles authentication, keeps the session alive, and optionally connects to an open TIA Portal project.
Explore
Browse the diagnostic buffer, monitor live tag values, check active alarms. Everything refreshes automatically — no manual polling required.
Ask
Open the AI Agent and type your question. It pulls the data it needs, reasons over it, and gives you an answer in plain language.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Which Siemens PLCs are compatible?
Any S7 PLC with the WebServer function enabled: S7-1200 and S7-1500 that supports the WebServer API (CPU firmware V2.0 or later for S7-1500). The WebServer must be activated in TIA Portal or STEP 7 and the PLC must be reachable over IP. If your plant disables the WebServer for security reasons, S7-1500 CPUs are also supported over OPC UA instead.
Do I need TIA Portal installed to use S7 PLC Buddy?
No. TIA Portal is completely optional. The dashboard, data browser, alarm management, and AI Agent all work with a direct PLC connection only. TIA Portal V21 integration unlocks additional capabilities: browsing block source code, reading hardware configuration, and Ladder-to-SCL migration assistance.
Is my PLC data sent to the cloud?
No. PLC data stays on your local network regardless of connection method (WebServer or OPC UA). By default the AI Agent sends conversation text to your chosen provider's API (Anthropic, OpenAI, or OpenRouter) — raw memory blocks and tag values are not transmitted unless you explicitly include them in your message. If you need the AI Agent to stay fully on-network too, point it at a local Ollama instance instead; nothing leaves your machine or network in that case. API keys are encrypted and stored locally.
Which TIA Portal version is required?
TIA Portal V21. The integration uses the TIA Portal Openness API, which is version-specific. V21 must be installed on the same Windows machine running S7 PLC Buddy. Support for other versions is on the roadmap.
Does it work offline or on an isolated plant network?
The PLC connection features (dashboard, data browser, alarms) work fully offline on your plant network — no internet required, whether you connect via the WebServer API or OPC UA. The AI Agent only needs an outbound internet connection if you use a cloud provider (Anthropic, OpenAI, or OpenRouter); point it at a local Ollama instance instead and the AI Agent works fully offline too. For a fully air-gapped setup with a cloud AI provider, you can run S7 PLC Buddy on a laptop bridged between the plant network and an internet connection.
How do I get an Anthropic API key?
Create a free account at console.anthropic.com. Anthropic's API is pay-as-you-go — typical diagnostic sessions cost a few cents. Enter your key once in S7 PLC Buddy's Settings. It is encrypted and stored locally; it is never transmitted except to authenticate directly with Anthropic's API.
Can I use a different AI provider, or run models locally?
Yes. Settings has a Model Provider toggle: Anthropic Claude, or any OpenAI-compatible endpoint, including OpenAI directly, OpenRouter for access to a wide range of hosted models, or Ollama for running models fully on your own machine or network with no cloud dependency and no API key required. You can switch providers at any time without losing your conversation history.
What happens after the 14-day trial ends?
After the trial, the app moves to free mode: PLC connection, dashboard, and data browser remain available. The AI Agent and TIA Portal integration require a Pro license. All your settings, watchlists, and conversation history are preserved — nothing is lost when the trial ends or when you later activate a license.
Can I export diagnostic data for reporting?
Yes. The diagnostic buffer can be exported to CSV with a single click — columns include ISO 8601 timestamp, event status, human-readable description, and event reference. AI Agent conversations can be exported as Markdown files.
